You’ve finished work, closed the laptop and technically your working day is over.
But your mind hasn’t got the message.
You’re thinking about the email you didn’t answer, the conversation you had earlier, tomorrow’s meeting or the task you didn’t quite finish.
Physically you’ve left work. Mentally, you’re still there.
Switching off isn’t always as simple as deciding not to think about work. But creating a clear end to your working day can make the transition from work mode to home mode feel more defined.

Why unfinished work follows us home
Sometimes it’s not the amount of work that’s occupying your mind — it’s the fact that something feels unfinished.
Instead of relying on yourself to remember it tomorrow, write down exactly what needs to happen next.
Rather than:
Finish presentation
Try:
Tomorrow at 9am: check final three slides and send to Sarah.
You’ve given the task somewhere to go. You don’t need to keep mentally holding onto it for the rest of the evening.
Try a three-minute work shutdown
Before finishing work, spend three minutes doing this:
1. Capture
Write down anything unfinished or still going around in your head.
2. Decide
Give each important task a clear next action or decide when you’ll come back to it.
3. Close
Shut down the computer, close the notebook and physically finish working.
It sounds incredibly simple, but that’s the point.
You’re creating a repeatable end to your working day rather than drifting straight from work into the rest of your evening.
Create a work-to-home transition
If you commute, the journey home naturally creates some separation between work and home.
When you work from home, that boundary can disappear completely.
Your laptop closes and you’re immediately in the same room, surrounded by the same things.
So create your own transition.
Leave your workspace if you can. Change your clothes. Make a drink. Put some music on. Go outside for five minutes. Change the lighting or introduce a different scent into the room.
It doesn’t need to be an elaborate routine.
You just need something that says:
Work has finished. I’m home now.

Protect the boundary you’ve created
Once you’ve finished, try not to keep reopening the door to work.
If you don’t genuinely need to be available, turn off work notifications and move your laptop or work phone out of sight.
And if something pops into your head later, write it down rather than reopening your emails.
You haven’t forgotten it.
You’ve simply decided that it belongs to tomorrow.
Try this five-minute work-to-home reset
If you don’t have time for a longer routine, try this:
Minute 1: Write down anything unfinished.
Minute 2: Decide the first thing you’ll do tomorrow.
Minute 3: Close everything connected to work.
Minute 4: Physically change something — leave the room, change clothes, open a window or make a drink.
Minute 5: Do something that belongs to home rather than work. Put music on, introduce a scent you enjoy, step outside or simply sit down for a moment.
Five minutes won’t magically erase a stressful day.
But it can create a boundary where there wasn’t one before.
And sometimes the problem isn’t your routine
It’s also worth saying this.
If your workload is consistently unmanageable, you’re expected to respond outside your working hours or you regularly have to work late just to keep up, an evening routine isn’t going to solve the underlying problem.
Sometimes the thing that needs to change isn’t how well you switch off.
It’s what’s happening before you try to.
What do you need after work?
At Rowin Scents, we often come back to one question:
What do I need today?
After work, the answer might be quiet. Fresh air. A walk. Music. Ten minutes without anybody asking you for anything.
Or it might simply be changing the atmosphere around you and marking the fact that the working day is finished.
There’s no perfect way to switch off.
Start by giving work a clear ending — and let home begin.
